School Council Meeting - Monday, February 3, 2025

Greetings and Attendance(Time: 10 minutes)

  • Welcome new parents!

 

Approval of Minutes from December (Time: 5 minutes)

  • Approved.
  • Treasurer’s Report
  • $3000 carried over from last year.
  • $760.00 raised from the recent movie night.

 

School Council Members

Discussion on how to build membership in the future.

  • Get more parents to participate
  • School council helps support events within school through fundraising
  • School council email is created, please reply so you’ll be on email list in future
  • Scan QR if not done so to communicate on Whatsapp group
  • Will have portion on school newsletter for school council news 

 

Movie Night:

  • Still looking for volunteers for the night.
  • A minimum of 10 volunteers is needed.
  • Updates will be shared via WhatsApp.
     

Future Activities:

  • Zumba night.
  • Dental care event (Pro Grant).
     

What’s Happening at School?

Volleyball Teams:

  • Junior Boys placed 4th in the area.
  • Intermediate Boys placed 4th in the area.
  • Intermediate Girls placed 1st in the area.
  • Intermediate Girls placed 4th out of 104 schools at regionals.

Family Engagement:

Parents engagement 

  • Trying to crate meaningful relationships with families
  • Had breakfast last week
  • Parents stated they wanted to be more engaged within community 

Lunar New Year Activities:

  • Activities for lunar new year Grade 8 's helped lead activities:
    • Origami snakes and cats.
    • Storytelling.
    • Lion dance.
    • Designing scales for a snake display.

Grades 1-3 fire safety :

  • Fire department came in to talk about fire safety  

     

Principal’s Report

Pro Grant Info:

  • Get money from board to  support projects that improve and help school and families
  • Use of money will be decided by school council (parents reaching out)  (guest speaker etc.)
  • Can submit 1 proposal per grant
  • Proposal must include purpose, details (that are aligned with ministry commitments/YRDSB properties) budget and outcome
  • We cannot use as gifts, or salary
  • Areas to focus on: social inclusion, racism, mental health, engaging community voices, knowledge building, social media safety, hate and discrimination 
  • Must have report completed by June 20th
  • Normally $800 per school
     

20th Anniversary Celebration (May 22, 3:30–5:30 PM):

  • Taking place right after school finishes
  • 10 teachers on committee
  • Please reach out to school council if want to participate
  • Performances, music, cake etc.
